Are you experiencing something that is floating in daylight and when you look at them, they keep on moving and then try to swim around in a particular direction?
Stop here, this could be the sign of having an ocular condition that is resulted due to debris in vitreous humor and gives rise to eye floaters.
What is vitreous humor?
It is a gel like substance that’s found between the lens and retina. It’s mainly composed of water (around 98%) and collagen. Its major role is to maintain the round shape of eye and another important function is to maintain the clarity of vision.
So what’s its relation with eye floaters?
Actually, when the debris (collagen, damaged pieces of retina, calcium etc) is accumulated inside vitreous humor then they appear and become more clear in the light.
Causes
- Aging
- Injury
- Anxiety
- Myopia
- Sometimes hypertension
- Eye surgery
- Uveitis
- Retinal detachment
- Diabetic retinopathy
When such eye floaters get risky?
- Affecting the eyesight
- Seeing flashes of light
- Peripheral vision loss (curtain light defect)
These experiences indicate retinal damage and it seeks medical emergency.
Diagnosis
The ophthalmologist examines the eye using eye drops that dilate the eye hence he can spot them.
Treatment
So far there are no proper medications to control them. But the ophthalmologist has few remedies to manage them.
- Laser therapy: In it, these floaters are targeted by laser and destroyed.
- Vitrectomy: Replacement of vitreous humor with a solution through small incision.
What can you do yourself?
- Ignore them so they may not irritate though they don’t vanish.
- Keep yourself hydrated
- Eat citrus fruits
